Historical Catalogue

How many songs, albums, riddims and artists has Jamaica produced? Nobody has a defensible answer yet. This is the start of one: a source-backed census where every number can say what was counted, what was excluded and which evidence supports it.

What you see below is a seed: a data model, counting rules and a small, sourceable starter set. Large figures are labelled ESTIMATE and are working ranges, not database counts. Artist origin is recorded as UNKNOWN until a documented source says otherwise.

Non-negotiable counting rules

  • A song is not a recording. Work (composition) → recording (performance/mix) → track → release group (album concept) → release (pressing). Reissues never inflate the album total.
  • Riddims are modelled independently. One riddim can carry hundreds of cuts; each cut is a recording, not a new riddim.
  • Artists are deduplicated by evidence. Aliases, group memberships and producer credits resolve to one canonical ID — never merged on name alone.
  • Genre is many-to-many. Totals are deduplicated by recording, never by adding genre columns together.
  • Origin is never inferred. Birthplace, nationality and heritage require a documented source; otherwise the bucket stays unknown.

  • VERIFIED PRIMARY Official archive, institutional catalogue, original release artifact or rights/label documentation.
  • VERIFIED SECONDARY Reliable scholarly or reference source (e.g. Jamaica Information Service).
  • DATABASE DERIVED Present in a specialist discography database but not independently confirmed.
  • CANDIDATE Plausible entry awaiting source verification.
  • CONFLICTED Reliable sources disagree.
  • UNKNOWN No adequate evidence located.
