1976–2006
**Culture** was founded in Kingston, Jamaica in 1976 by vocalist Joseph Hill (26 November 1949 – 19 August 2006), alongside Albert Walker and Kenneth Dayes.
Their debut album **Two Sevens Clash** (1977), produced by Joe Gibbs, is widely regarded as one of the greatest reggae albums ever made. The title track predicted apocalyptic events for July 7, 1977 — a prophecy so widely believed in Jamaica that many businesses closed on that date.
Joseph Hill's raw, passionate tenor voice and the group's militant Rastafarian philosophy made Culture one of roots reggae's most uncompromising and authentic voices. The group continued performing and recording until Hill's death in 2006.
