Lee 'Scratch' Perry
1959–2021
Rainford Hugh Perry (20 March 1936 – 29 August 2021) was the mad genius of Jamaican music — a producer and performer whose **Black Ark** studio in Kingston became one of the most mythologized recording spaces in music history.
Perry produced foundational recordings for Bob Marley & The Wailers, Junior Murvin (*Police & Thieves*), The Congos (*Heart of the Congos*), and Max Romeo (*War Inna Babylon*). His techniques of studio manipulation, tape echo, and sonic layering defined the grammar of dub.
He received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, posthumously cementing his status as a giant of world music.
