Yard Tape

A yard tape is an informal recording of a live session or clash — historically cassette, now digital — circulated among fans to preserve exclusive dubplates, freestyles, and crowd reactions unavailable on official releases.

Why it matters: Yard tapes document oral and performance history that labels never archived. Collectors and scholars use them to trace how tunes broke, how deejays adapted lyrics, and how sounds earned reputation.
