Sound Tape

Sound tape refers to circulated recordings of sound-system sets — cousins to yard tapes — traded among fans to capture selector sets, rare dubplates, and live deejay appearances from a particular era or venue.

Why it matters: Before streaming, tapes preserved ephemeral performance. They remain primary sources for historians reconstructing how riddims and voicings moved through the island when official releases lagged behind the dance.
