Special

A special is an exclusive recording commissioned for one sound system — usually naming or praising that sound in the lyrics — cut to dubplate and withheld from general release so rivals cannot play the same ammunition.

Why it matters: Specials fuel the economics of clashes and loyalty between sounds and artists. They explain why some classic performances exist only on yard tapes or clash DVDs rather than official albums.
