Dubplate

A dubplate is a custom-cut acetate or vinyl disc carrying an exclusive version of a track — often a voicing commissioned for one sound system — used as ammunition in clashes and as a badge of status on the circuit.

Why it matters: Dubplates turn music into competitive currency. A sound with fresh specials can dominate a session; losing exclusivity when a tune goes public is a long-standing tension between producers, artists, and sounds.
