Dub Box

A dub box is a custom-built preamp and effects unit — often associated with King Tubby's setup — used to manipulate bass, echo, and EQ live while playing records, blurring performance and mixing in real time.

Why it matters: The dub box foreshadowed the mixing desk as instrument. It connects sound-system performance to studio dub techniques and explains why Tubby's live sets felt like remixes happening in the moment.
