Preamp

A preamp boosts and shapes the signal from turntables, CDJs, or mixers before it reaches power amplifiers, letting engineers tune bass, balance horns, and squeeze maximum clean volume from a stack.

Why it matters: Custom preamps became a secret weapon in Jamaican sound wars. Tweaked EQ and gain staging can make one system feel heavier than another with similar wattage — a technical edge listeners describe in almost mystical terms.
