Kabaka Pyramid has released his second album, The Kalling, on Friday, September 30, 2022. The 15-track set is produced by Damian “Jr Gong” Marley and arrives through Ghetto Youths International and Kabaka’s own Bebble Rock Music, according to the release announcement.

Born Keron Salmon in Kingston, Kabaka came up through the Bebble Rock collective and Protoje’s home studio, where he cut the Rebel Music EP in 2011. His name pairs “Kabaka,” a Ugandan royal title, with the pyramids of Africa — a nod, he has said, to longevity and to leaving messages for the generations to come. Songs like “Warrior,” “Well Done” and “Reggae Music” made him one of the lead voices of the roots revival that gathered around Chronixx, Protoje and Jesse Royal in the early 2010s. His debut album Kontraband, also steered by Marley, followed in 2018.
Who is on it
The guest list stretches across generations. Peter Tosh is sampled on the opener “Mystik Man”; Buju Banton joins on “Faded Away,” which builds on Junior Byles; and “EZ Ride” reaches back to Eddie Fitzroy. Damian Marley appears twice, on “Red Gold and Green” and the bonus cut “Kontraband Pt. 2.” The title track brings together Stephen Marley, Protoje and Jesse Royal. Jemere Morgan sings on “Grateful” and “Energy,” Tifa on “Mr. Rastaman,” Black Am I on “Mary Jane,” Nathália on “Stand Up” and Answele on “Life Is Everything.”
Production credits run to Damian Marley, Stephen Marley, Sean “Young Pow” Diedrick and Kabaka himself. Four singles led the way: “Make Things Work,” “Red Gold and Green,” “Grateful” and “The Kalling.”
“The Kalling is really about my journey in music being for a higher purpose, not just to get rich or popular, but to inspire a higher vibration in whoever listens,” Kabaka said in the announcement. “While the majority seek pleasure and sense gratification, there are a few who the Most High kall upon to keep the balance inna earth. Music is what I use to answer the kall and you can feel it throughout this album.”
