    The Maytals Take Shape in Kingston: Toots Hibbert, Raleigh Gordon and Jerry Matthias Form a Vocal Trio, 1962

    Frederick ‘Toots’ Hibbert leaves May Pen for Trench Town, meets Henry ‘Raleigh’ Gordon and Jerry Matthias, and puts together the harmony group that will carry his voice from ska through rocksteady into reggae. First called the Vikings, then the Maytals — a name borrowed in part from his home town.

    ‘Catch a Fire’: Stranded in London, The Wailers Take Chris Blackwell’s Advance, Go Home to Kingston and Make the Album That Takes Reggae to the World

    Released by Island Records on April 13, 1973 in a hand-riveted Zippo lighter sleeve, ‘Catch a Fire’ is the first reggae album marketed like a rock record. Cut on eight-track at Dynamic, Harry J’s and Randy’s, then overdubbed at Basing Street by Wayne Perkins and John ‘Rabbit’ Bundrick, it sells 14,000 copies in its first weeks — and sets Bob Marley on the road out of Trench Town.

    ‘Tempted to Touch’: Beres Hammond Comes Home to Penthouse, Trades a Riddim for Studio Time and Writes the Song of the Decade in Three Weeks

    After Hurricane Gilbert and Tappa Zukie’s tougher ‘Putting Up Resistance’, Beres Hammond returns to Jamaica for good in 1990. At Donovan Germain’s Penthouse studio a chance deal — voice a tune on my riddim and the session time is yours — produces ‘Tempted to Touch’. Within a month it is No. 1 in New York and Kingston; ‘A Love Affair’ (1992) follows with ‘Is This a Sign’ and ‘Respect to You Baby’. The King of Lovers Rock is crowned.

    Four decades after Studio One, Toots Hibbert finally takes home the Grammy — a star-studded remake album pairing his voice with Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson and others on the classics that built his name.

However, after being home for a few days, I started to question whether I had ever left Jamaica at all. If it wasn't for the long plane ride, I could have been fooled.
