Two years on, Perry Henzell’s film The Harder They Come carried Jamaican music to cinema audiences worldwide. “Pressure Drop” and “Sweet and Dandy” — another Kong-era Maytals side — sat on the soundtrack alongside Desmond Dekker and the Melodians, the Encyclopedia.com entry notes. The Associated Press, in its 2020 obituary, listed “Pressure Drop” among the classics that “helped make [reggae] an international movement.”

Covers and afterlife

The Clash cut it for their self-titled 1977 debut; Keith Richards, Robert Palmer and dozens of others followed. The Guardian’s David Katz observed that Hibbert’s Kong recordings were “given vibrant second lives by cover versions in Britain and elsewhere.” The original, though, belongs to Toots — the grit in the voice, the band locked behind him, the lyric that turns personal grievance into universal law.

Why it matters

“Pressure Drop” is proof that the Maytals were writing reggae’s moral vocabulary before the genre had fully announced itself abroad. It remains one of the most covered Jamaican songs of all time.
