On National Heroes Day, 15 October 2007, Shaggy — Orville Richard Burrell — was conferred the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD) for his contribution to the Jamaican music industry, the Jamaica Gleaner reported. Governor-General Professor Kenneth Hall presented the insignia at the Ceremony of Investiture and Presentation of National Honours and Awards at the National Indoor Sports Centre in St Andrew, alongside twelve musicians and entertainers honoured that day.
The ceremony
The Jamaica Observer listed Shaggy among recipients of the Order of Distinction, Commander Class — the same rank awarded to Burning Spear (Winston Rodney), Sir Coxsone Dodd (posthumously, collected by his wife) and Luciano (Jepther McClymont). The Gleaner quoted Shaggy after the ceremony: “Me is a man wey nuh normally get nervous pon nutt’n, but mi get nervous dis morning. An jus fi get recognise fi what yuh do … is probably one of the best awards mi get wey mi feel good.” He added that sharing the platform with Burning Spear — “weh mi feel fi him, it did long overdue” — and Sir Coxsone made the moment especially meaningful.

Shaggy arrived at King’s House with two Grammy wins (Boombastic, 1996), diamond-certified album sales and global hits from “It Wasn’t Me” to “Angel.” The national honour placed the Brooklyn-raised marine in the company of the architects of Jamaican sound-system culture — recognition from the country whose flag he would continue to wave on every international stage.
Why it matters
The Order of Distinction marked Jamaica’s formal acknowledgment that Shaggy’s American chart triumphs were also national achievements — the crossover king welcomed home as a Commander of the realm.
