Shaggy

Orville Richard Burrell (born October 22, 1968), known professionally as Shaggy, is a Jamaican-American reggae musician who scored hits with the songs "It Wasn't Me", "Boombastic", "In the Summertime", "Oh Carolina", and "Angel". He has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, winning twice for Best Reggae Album with Boombastic in 1996 and 44/876 with Sting in 2019, and has won the Brit Award for International Male Solo Artist in 2002.

In 2007, he was awarded the Jamaican Order of Distinction with the rank of Commander. In 2022, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Brown University.

Early life

Orville Richard Burrell was born on October 22, 1968, in Kingston. At the age of 18, he moved to New York City with his mother.

Burrell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on April 12, 1988 and obtained the MOS 0811 (Field Artillery Cannon Crewman). He served with a Field Artillery Battery in the 10th Marine Regiment during the Persian Gulf War. Discharged on May 4, 1992, the highest rank he achieved was Lance Corporal, although he was reduced in rank twice. Burrell perfected his signature "toasting" voice while he was in the Marine Corps.

    Produced by Shaun Pizzonia — Sting International — Shaggy's dancehall remake of the Folkes Brothers' 1960 ska landmark tops the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in March 1993, returns reggae to British mainstream radio, and launches a Brooklyn marine's global career.

    Long before the Levi’s advert and the Grammy, Orville Burrell was a Flatbush toaster cutting dubplates with Sting International — ‘Mampie’ and ‘Big Up’ topped New York reggae radio, and by 1995 Virgin had the ma dog on a global album.

    At the 38th Annual Grammy Awards on 28 February 1996, Shaggy takes home Best Reggae Album for Boombastic — the Virgin set whose title track had already topped the UK chart and cracked the American Top 10 after a Levi’s jeans campaign.

    The Sting International-produced confession anthem from Hot Shot dethrones Destiny's Child's 'Independent Women' for two weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 in February 2001 — and earns Shaggy his only nomination outside Best Reggae Album at the 44th Grammys.

    Released in August 2000, Hot Shot entered the Billboard 200 at No. 87 and climbed for six months before displacing Jennifer Lopez’s J.Lo at No. 1 in February 2001 — the slow-burn blockbuster that made Shaggy the biggest-selling Caribbean act on the American albums chart of the 21st century.
