Macka Diamond — Charmaine Munroe, who entered the industry as Lady Mackerel — told THE STAR she will hang up her microphone at the end of 2026, the DancehallMag and Abeng Media report in coverage of the Jamaica Star interview. After more than three decades in dancehall, she said it is time to focus on herself and the people she loves, reunite with her son, and step away from a business where she no longer feels wanted.
“I have given too much of my life to music,” she told the Star, per DancehallMag. She linked that cost to family: her birthday falls in January, and she wants to be with her son — saying, in Abeng’s syndication of the interview, that she “lose my son to it” while people “still a bring mi down.” She described industry players who, in her view, had bullied her toward the exit because of her age. “I haven’t got love from nuff of the industry people dem; and thank God for my fans, as they are the ones who have been holding up,” she said.
Her frustration extended to promoters and gatekeepers. She insisted she had not been begging for work — “I am still getting and refusing shows,” Abeng quotes — and framed the door as closed from the other side. On legacy, she was plain: “I done have my hit songs already, so no one can take that away from mi,” adding that nobody could take her royalties or what she is owed. To those who wanted her gone, she said: “I want all of who was wishing for me to leave dancehall [to] take it and enjoy it now,” and, in DancehallMag’s account, “Uno leave mi now.”
TikTok, critics and a plan — not yet a last bow
The retirement announcement did not arrive in a vacuum. On 7 October 2026, IRIE FM reported that Macka had pushed back at critics of her TikTok presence — including commentary that she had abandoned music for the platform’s high-paying virtual gifts. She captioned one video “leaving dancehall,” IRIE FM noted, but said on the recording that she would not be bullied off TikTok and would continue to do music at her own pace.
That earlier stance matters for how to read this week’s interview. Macka’s words to THE STAR are a clear statement of intent: retire when the year ends, look after herself and her family, and stop fighting for a seat she believes the industry has already pulled away. Whether every show after December is truly her last will be for her to decide. For now, the headline is her plan — not a farewell concert already played.
