Bob Marley: One Love – Music Inspired by the Film (Deluxe) has won Best Reggae Album at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. Presenter Queen Sheba announced the result at the Premiere Ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 2, 2025, DancehallMag reports; executive producer Samuel Griesemer collected the award, according to Reggaeville.

The Recording Academy credits the win to Justin Eshak, Samuel Griesemer, Cedella Marley, Stephen Marley, Ziggy Marley, Areli Quirarte, Brittney Ramsdell and Randy Spendlove. The other nominees, from 75 entries, were Vybz Kartel’s Party With Me, Shenseea’s Never Gets Late Here, Collie Buddz’s Take It Easy and The Wailers’ Evolution.

The record

Not to be confused with the film’s original soundtrack of Bob Marley and the Wailers recordings, the “Music Inspired by the Film” set was released on February 16, 2024 via Island Records and Tuff Gong to accompany the Paramount biopic, the Gleaner explains. Its ten tracks are Marley songs sung by others: Skip Marley (“Exodus”) and Mystic Marley (“Misty Morning”), grandchildren of Bob; fellow nominee Shenseea (“No Woman No Cry”); Nigeria’s Wizkid (“One Love”) and Bloody Civilian (“Natural Mystic”); Kacey Musgraves (“Three Little Birds”), who won Best Country Song on the same night; Daniel Caesar (“Waiting in Vain”); Jessie Reyez (“Is This Love”); Leon Bridges (“Redemption Song”); and Farruko (“Rasta Reggae (Jamming)”). It reached No. 10 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart.

It makes two Marley wins in a row after Julian Marley and Antaeus’s Colors of Royal in 2024, and comes four days before what would have been Bob Marley’s 80th birthday, which the Government marks with a concert at Emancipation Park on February 6. “Bob’s legacy continues,” Culture Minister Olivia Grange wrote on Instagram. “Congratulations to everyone involved in this project.”

Kartel in the room

Vybz Kartel and Shenseea, both first-time nominees, attended the ceremony — Kartel having been granted a US visa the previous Friday, six months after walking free. He posted a photo with his fiancée, Sidem: “I Can’t Lose when I’m with you.” His Viking anniversary album had dropped two days before the show.

The result did not land quietly at home. “The people who judge this category are crazy. They will always pick Marley no matter what, which is wrong,” one Instagram user wrote in a thread the Jamaica Observer collected under the headline “Marley Grammy dominance continues.” Industry figures turned the complaint into a prescription. “The truth is that the Grammys are an industry event. I do believe more Jamaicans should get involved and become voting members,” said manager and producer Gutty Bling. “Until then can we complain about who wins and loses every year.” Producer Richard “Breadback” Bramwell agreed: “We the artistes, we the musicians, we the producers, need to come together and join the academy. Stop talking bout Marley this and Marley that, because the voting members a pick who they know.”
