Mento

Mento is Jamaica's folk-popular acoustic tradition — banjo, rumba box, and witty lyrics — that predates ska on record and often appeared on hotel entertainment circuits, sometimes marketed abroad as "calypso."

Why it matters: Mento explains rural and comic roots beneath later genres. Revival interest connects tourists' stereotypes with genuine folk history and the acoustic backbone later echoed in reggae revival projects.
