Federal Records

Federal Records — founded by Ken Khouri — operated Jamaica's first pressing plant and recording studio from the 1950s, cutting early mento, ska, and rocksteady sides before the facility was later acquired by Tuff Gong.

Why it matters: Federal anchors the island's industrial recording timeline. Khouri's plant made local vinyl viable, enabling the explosion of independent labels that followed in the 1960s.
