In 1969, Jimmy Cliff was at Dynamic Sounds in Kingston recording “You Can Get It If You Really Want” when Perry Henzell approached him outside the studio, Cliff recalled in an interview published by the Wall Street Journal. Henzell was making a film and wanted Cliff to write music for it — and, after reading a script originally titled Hard Road to Travel, to play its lead. Cliff told the Jamaica Gleaner that Henzell sealed the deal with a line he had never heard from anyone else: “I think you’re a better actor than singer.”

Shooting in Kingston

Directed by Henzell and co-written with Trevor D. Rhone, The Harder They Come follows Ivanhoe “Ivan” Martin from rural St Elizabeth to Kingston, where a record-company rip-off and police harassment push him toward crime and a fatal shoot-out. Wikipedia notes the film’s naturalistic use of Jamaican locations and patois — and that Cliff improvised the title phrase during a scene where Ivan confronts a bicycle-shop owner. Henzell asked him to write a theme song within two days; the recording session shown in the film, Cliff told the Wall Street Journal, was the real thing — Gladstone Anderson on piano, Jackie Jackson on bass, Winston Grennan on drums.

The Carib Theatre

The film premiered at the Carib Theatre in Kingston on 5 June 1972, Wikipedia and the Jamaica Observer agree. Cliff could not get near the cinema that night — “all I could see was a sea of people,” he told the Observer — and heard that crowds broke railings to get inside. He watched it two weeks later. New World Pictures released the film in the United States in February 1973; midnight screenings the following April turned it into a cult phenomenon and, in the words of multiple obituaries, the vehicle that brought reggae to international audiences before Bob Marley’s mainstream crossover.

Why it matters

Cliff was reggae’s first worldwide star not only because of the songs but because audiences saw Ivan on screen — striving, cheated, defiant. The film and its soundtrack, including “Many Rivers to Cross”, remain the reference point for everything that followed in his career and in Jamaican cinema.
