In 2011 the Government of Jamaica posthumously conferred the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD) on Dennis Brown for his contribution to the Jamaican music industry, the Jamaica Gleaner reported. The honour was bestowed at the annual National Honours and Awards ceremony at King’s House on 17 October — National Heroes Day. Brown’s widow, Yvonne Brown, accepted the insignia on his behalf.
Twelve years on
Brown had died on 1 July 1999, aged 42, from respiratory failure, the Guardian records. The Gleaner noted that the award came “12 years after his death” and after the Dennis Brown Trust had made application twice before. NBC News reported that Jamaica had awarded Brown “one of its highest civic honors” — a fitting tribute for a musician “more beloved than Bob Marley among many Jamaican reggae fans.” The Jamaica Star had announced the honour in September 2011, calling Brown “without a doubt one of Jamaica’s most influential music icons.”
The Commander class
The Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander is Jamaica’s sixth-highest national award. Brown was among five Jamaicans from the arts honoured that day, alongside Millie Small, George Carter, Highland “Dobby” Dobson and Robert “Robbie” Lyn, the Gleaner reported. Yvonne Brown told the Jamaica Observer it was “a fantastic day for the family,” adding: “Nothing happens before the time and Dennis is still with us… in spirit.”
Why it matters
Honours do not replace a life cut short by addiction and illness. They do fix a place in the national record. Jamaica’s Order of Distinction says what Brown’s fans already knew: the Crown Prince was among the island’s greatest — a child prodigy who recorded more than seventy-five albums and gave reggae one of its most honeycoated, enduring voices.
