Jah9
Janine Elizabeth Cunningham (born 23 May 1983), better known as Jah9, is a Jamaican singer and yoga teacher.
Biography
Jah9 was born in Montego Bay in Saint James, Jamaica. Her father was a Baptist minister and her mother was a teacher and social worker. She spent much of her childhood in Falmouth,Trelawny. In 1991, the family moved to Kingston. After a period at university, she commenced singling professionally.
Her music is often described as "jazz on dub", because her singing voice is influenced by Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, partly combined with the dancehall sound of Sizzla and the more potent dub rhythms similar to those of Augustus Pablo. She has recorded three albums for VP Records: New Name (2013), 9 (2016) and Note to Self (2020).

Jah9 delivered a first class performance at ‘The Dub Treatment’, her new branded event experience that premiered at the cozy Countryside venue to close Reggae Month. The event was well supported by not only loyal Jah 9 fans but was well supported by the media and fellow artists who made cameo appearances during the three hour show, including Chronixx, Raging Fyah lead singer Kumar Bent, Kabaka Pyramid and others.

In February of 2013, Jah9 presented to the world her debut album, New Name, which has been well received by lovers of roots music the world over. Prior to that full album release however, Jah9 had organized the production of a mixtape called 9MM. She had intended to give the youth some positive message music for free. The 9MM mixtape featured snippets from the album, as well as messages from Dr. Walter Rodney, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, and HIM Emperor Haile Sellassie I.
