YG Marley has released his debut single, “Praise Jah in the Moonlight,” on Wednesday, December 27, 2023. The 4:23 reggae song is self-released on his YG Marley Music imprint, according to Wikipedia and the UK Official Charts Company.
The song is in the JamaicansMusic library, sourced from YG Marley’s official YouTube channel: press Play above, open the “Praise Jah in the Moonlight” release page, or jump to the player below.
Three generations on one writing credit
YG — Joshua Marley — is the grandson of Bob Marley and the son of Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley. The credits reflect the lineage: the song is written by Joshua Marley, Lauryn Hill and Bob Marley, produced by YG Marley, Hill and Johnny G, and samples Bob Marley and the Wailers’ “Crisis,” from 1978’s Kaya.
It arrives already familiar to some. In the closing months of 2023, YG performed the song at several of his mother’s concerts; clips spread on TikTok, and fans began asking for an official release. “Marley was convinced to drop the track after performing it live several times at his mother’s concerts,” the Official Charts Company notes.
Editor’s note: what followed is told in our February 2024 report — a Billboard Hot 100 debut, a UK top-five and a No. 1 in New Zealand.
