Peter “Peetah” Morgan, lead singer of Morgan Heritage, died on Sunday, February 25, 2024. He was 46. His family announced the death in a post on social media that did not give a cause, and asked for privacy, the Associated Press reports.

A son of Denroy Morgan, Peetah formed Morgan Heritage in 1994 with his siblings Una, Roy “Gramps,” Nakhamyah “Lukes” and Memmalatel “Mr Mojo” Morgan. The family band became one of reggae’s most durable acts, with “Don’t Haffi Dread (To Be Rasta),” “Down by the River,” “She’s Still Loving Me” and “Reggae Bring Back Love” among its signatures. Strictly Roots won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2016, and Avrakedabra was nominated at the 60th awards in 2018. Last August 6, at the Independence Grand Gala, the Government presented the band with the Jamaica Reggae Icon Award; at Reggae Sumfest in July they played their first set at the festival in more than a decade and paid homage to their father.

“If you follow reggae music and country music, it’s a lot of storytelling,” Peetah told the AP in 2018, as Gramps was introducing reggae to Nashville. “In reggae we tell the story of people suffering.”

‘A colossal loss for Jamaica’

Prime Minister Andrew Holness said his “heart is heavy,” calling the death “a colossal loss for Jamaica and for reggae music,” the Gleaner reports. “Our country is grateful for his life and contribution and the sharing of his exceptional musical talent which touched each of us.” Opposition Leader Mark Golding said the siblings had “formed a musical powerhouse that resonated globally.”

Culture Minister Olivia Grange, who offered condolences to Peetah’s widow, Marie, recalled helping with funeral arrangements for Denroy Morgan in 2022: “now to lose Peetah … it’s really heartbreaking,” she said, according to the Gleaner. Ziggy Marley wrote: “Our community will miss him bad bad bad. JAH know. JAH love.” Producer Sean “Contractor” Edwards said Peetah had “a voice like Bunny Rugs, who was lead singer of Third World, that comes around once in a hundred years.”

Update, March 1: the family has announced a memorial service for March 7 in Orlando, Florida; the venue is yet to be confirmed, the Observer reports.
