read full storyDavid 'Ziggy' Marley was born on October 17th 1968, in Trenchtown Jamaica, as the first son of the reggae legend Bob Marley.
He made his music debut as the leader of the band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, which he formed with his siblings Cedella, Stephen and Sharon. The band put out their first song in 1979 with Bob Marley, called 'Children playing in the streets'. The band enjoyed success for a number of years as they became synonymous for blending blues, roots reggae and R&B, and they went on to produce a number of albums such as, Play the Game Right, Conscious Party, One Bright Day, Jahmekya, Joy and Blues, and Free Like We Want 2 B.
After two decades as the driving creative force behind The Melody Makers, Ziggy stepped out on his own with his first solo album, Dragonfly in 2003. His second solo album released in 2006 earned him his first solo Grammy award win for Best Reggae Album. He had previously won 3 Grammys with his sibling band The Melody makers. His third album titled Family Time, also won him a Grammy for Best Musical Album for Children.
Ziggy is also the founder of his own music label - Tuff Gong Worldwide.
