read full storyInspired by vocal legends, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, veteran reggae artist Michelle 'Songbird' Gordon combines classic soul, RnB, gospel and reggae to create her own signature style.
Michelle began singing from the young age of four in Kingston, Jamaica, to the simple rhythm of congo drums and tambourine. Moving to Miami, Florida with her mother, two sisters, and four brothers at the age of seven, Michelle's life was continuously blessed/influenced with music. An artist herself, her mother recorded several singles with reggae singer/producer Barry Biggs, and she inspired and encouraged Michelle. School choir gave Michelle more opportunities for vocal training, music lessons, and performing. She participated in singing competitions and talent shows, and won several awards.
Blessed with the power of a lead singer and the harmonious finesse of a background vocalist, Michelle Gordon's repertoire is impressive. She's opened shows for reggae music's top artists, Skeita Davis, Shabba Ranks, Jimmy Cliff, Coco Tea, Lady Saw and Kashief Lindo. She toured with Michael "Grammy" Rose (of Black Uhuru) as one of his background singers. Michelle performed background vocals on Marcia Griffith's album, Shining Time (released in 2005), and Pressure's album, Coming Back to You (released in 2009).
Michelle's first solo recording, "All The Man That I Need," was produced by Percy Chin from Jah Life Time Records. She went on to record with producer Willie Lindo for Heavy Beat Records and recorded several hit single and a duet with Jimmy Riley entitled "Private Number." She's a two-time Reggae Soca Music Award Nominee Artist for Best Reggae Female Vocalist. Recording with some of reggae's top producers, Percy Chin (Jah Life Records), Joe Fraser Records (Ras I Records), Eno Stafford (Epistar Productions), Heavy Beat Records, and Sly & Robbie, Michelle has earned the right to stand amongst reggae music's legends.
Released on the Meditations Record label, Michelle's debut solo album "Lioness", features 13 tracks that demonstrate her powerful vocal range, melodic talent, and skills writing conscious lyrics. Title track, "Lioness," celebrates the righteous path of the spiritually strong woman. "I'm in You," calls upon everyone to live in universal acceptance and love, seeing ourselves in others.
Michelle Michelle, Gordon's second album, was produced by Anthony Gordon for the Ras-I Productions Label. A revelatory collection of music, Michelle draws on the influences of roots, dancehall, lovers and urban reggae, with roots inspired "Jah Is Always Around" and "Father Help Me," and British styled lovers reggae, "Your Love In Me" and "Hurry Home Baby". Soul inspiring and conscious, Michelle Michelle appeals to an international audience.
A truly evolutionary artist, Michelle's music pays tribute to some of the greatest musical geniuses of all time, continuing their inspired work. In her songs today, Michelle blends musical styles and genres, relating to people worldwide. Songbird holds nothing back in her single for Rimshot Productions, "I Just Want to Love You". Cradled by a lover's rock reggae riddim, with a true R&B sultry soulful feel, Michelle's passionate voice carries listeners deep into the heart of the music. Look for her new video, "I Just Want to Love You," to follow shortly. Another new single, produced by Fitzroy Francis for the Mightyful13 label, entitled "Essence Of Love" debuted mid Sept. 2012 where it quickly moved up the charts attaining #1 status on the well respected Foundation Radio NY Reggae Top 30 Chart. While planning to follow up her #1 hit with the Mightyful 13 label, Michelle "Songbird" Gordon is also back in the studio working on her upcoming third solo album with the Gold Record winning team at BigUp Entertainment/Vybetribe Productions.
