Historical Catalogue

How many songs, albums, riddims and artists has Jamaica produced? Nobody has a defensible answer yet. This is the start of one: a source-backed census where every number can say what was counted, what was excluded and which evidence supports it.

Seed — not a census

What you see below is a seed: a data model, counting rules, a sourceable hand-curated starter set and one documented MusicBrainz relationship hop around it. Large figures are labelled ESTIMATE and are working ranges, not database counts. Every seeded count comes with a coverage figure, and artist origin is recorded as UNKNOWN until a documented source says otherwise. Seed v1.0 is the version of the reference documents and the seed data they lock — not a claim that the census is complete.

Non-negotiable counting rules

  • A song is not a recording. Work (composition) → recording (performance/mix) → track → release group (album concept) → release (pressing). Reissues never inflate the album total.
  • Riddims are modelled independently. One riddim can carry hundreds of cuts; each cut is a recording, not a new riddim.
  • Artists are deduplicated by evidence. Aliases, group memberships and producer credits resolve to one canonical ID — never merged on name alone.
  • Genre is many-to-many. Totals are deduplicated by recording, never by adding genre columns together.
  • Origin is never inferred. Birthplace, nationality and heritage require a documented source; otherwise the bucket stays unknown.

How it grows

MusicBrainz is the open metadata backbone, not the authority on Jamaican genre. Specialist archives and historians reconcile on top of it.

Phase A

MusicBrainz backbone

Ingest artists, aliases, works, recordings, release groups, releases, labels, areas and relationships from the open (CC0) MusicBrainz dump. MBIDs are retained permanently.

Implemented — full dump loaded into a scratch database (never the site DB); candidate extracts for Phase B written; seed artists MBID-resolved.

Phase B

Jamaican candidate set

Build candidates from Jamaican artist areas, release countries, genre tags, known labels/producers, riddim-linked artists and curated historian lists. No single tag is proof.

Neighbourhood import done (Seed v1.0): one documented relationship hop from every MBID-resolved seed artist — 84 artists, 104 memberships, 2,885 release groups. Bulk scoring of the Phase A extracts not started.

Phase C

Specialist reconciliation

Map Riddim Guide, Riddims World, UWI Roots Knotty Roots and the Vybz Kartel discography onto internal artists, recordings and riddims; historian corrections land in source assertions.
