Biography
read full storyZap Pow was a Jamaican reggae band that existed between 1969 and 1979. It was initially formed by Dwight Pinkney (guitar and vocals), Max Edwards (drums), Mike Williams (bass and vocals), Glen DaCosta (tenor, saxophone, vocals and flute), Joe McCormack (trombone), and David madden (trumpet and vocals). The band was essentially a collaboration of established musicians, as many of them had already performed with other bands. For example, Dwight Pinkney had previously worked with The Wailers, and both he and Williams played together in the band Winston Turner & the Untouchables.
During their ten-year run, they produced several singles including the hit 'This is Reggae Music' which was part of their debut album Revolutionary Zap Pow. The band underwent numerous member changes as Beres Hammond joined as lead vocal in 1975. It was at this point that the band experienced the height of stardom as their second album, Zap Pow Now (1976), topped the UK reggae chart. Their third album, Revolution, was released in the same year. Edwards left he group in 1977 and was replaced by Cornell Marshall, and they produced one final album titled Zap Pow (1978).
The band eventually dissipated in 1979, with most of the members going on to pursue successful solo careers.
