ORIGINS: FOLK MUSIC

Origins of Folk Music

Folk music originated in the 19th century but is often applied to music that is older than that. Some types of folk music are also called world music as it includes both traditional music as well as folk revival. The terms folk music, folk song, and folk dance are all comparatively expressions. They are extensions of the term folklore, which describe the customs, superstitions and traditions of the uncultured classes in society.

Starting in the mid-20th century a new form of popular folk music evolved from traditional folk music. This process and period is said to be called the second folk revival. This type of folk music is a fusion of all the following genres; folk rock, folk metal, electric folk among others. While contemporary folk music is a genre generally distinct from traditional folk music, in English it bares the same name, and it often shares the same performers and venues. Even some individual songs may be a blend of the two.

Music in Jamaica is said to be the most powerful art form and culture heritage of the land. With Folk Music termed to be the earliest form of Jamaican music with its rhythmic tunes and unique beats; it has evolved over the years to being one of the solid genres of Jamaican music to have rich history and cultural influence.
